Chapter Eight

The anticipated attack came early morning, just before first shift while they were eating breakfast. Their two squads and two squads from Foxtrot were in the galley and waking up for the day’s training. Third shift was currently in the sims, and second shift asleep. The space station was on the same time as the capital city, so it was about two hours after dawn there.

Tacnet lit up red, and despite acting immediately the enemy came out of FTL a second later before she was even fully on her feet and running for the door. It was the new FTL speeds, that warning used to give hours for the fleet to prepare before an enemy fleet could arrive, now they got a second.

Before her team was in the corridor and headed toward the airlock, the invasion fleet was already opening hostilities with their two fleets and ready shuttle destroyers were launching. She grimaced at the numbers displayed, they wouldn’t last long. The enemy appeared to have sent everything they had at the governing world of the Union.

She couldn’t even think of what those ten to one odds meant, the enemy had two fleets and two thousand star suits. They’d have to hold out for at least three or four minutes, before the ones stationed at the other worlds could even the odds. One of the fleets were already gone, as she raced toward the airlock, both doors open and nothing but the atmospheric shield active during deployment. There was no obstacle in their path as they streamed out into space.

The enemy was in ten, two hundred person tightly packed formations. Her sense of space and gravity fields told her at least sixty of them were on defense, the number of them they had between both platoons, and two thirds of their platoon were probably two minutes away still, lifting off ground at the moment. Gravity wise they were all supporting each other, but plasma wise they all had a tight shield around themselves, each group looking like a field of stars.

Any one of the ten groups could easily destroy all sixty of them, a hundred twenty including the sixty shuttles that were starting to implode at about a rate of one per second.

Their orders were to fly in pairs, no doubt the admiral was going to sacrifice them all, split them up into small two person groups to buy the time needed to get the other hundred and twenty up from the surface to continue the sacrifice until in three minutes the other twenty-eight hundred could arrive and even the odds, even exceed them.

It was really their only choice, she wasn’t angry about it, but she wasn’t going down that easy. Their only orders were to fight in pairs, how they fought was up to them.

She transmitted to all, “In their lines, now. Make it a plasma fight, and if they attack us with gravity they’ll have destabilized their own protective field and we can take out swaths.”

She wasn’t in command, and just a lieutenant, so it was only a suggestion.
